Graves Coat of Arms and English Origins
Coat of Arms of John Greaves. ( Graves ) The e was dropped in America. The Latin inscription " Superna Quaero " ( I SEEK HEAVENLY THINGS ).
A coat of arms was presented to an individual and members of the family were allowed to use it and modify it slightly in each generation. The date on his tomb is 13 October 1694.

Politics, The Colonization Society, and The Civil War
The Graves Family was heavily involved in politics in Kentucky being Judges, Lawyers, Justice's of the Peace and Congressmen. Henry Clay and William Jordan Graves had a profound effect on the family view of slavery. Family history shows that both men knew and visited the family of Thomas S. Graves. The Civil War divided the family in their beliefs.
