The family religions have been Episcopal, Baptist, Methodist, Luthern and Catholic.

Old Headstone of Thomas Sims Graves
The broken headstone of Thomas S. Graves as I found it in 1999. Old cemetery records indicate the stone was broken as early as 1934.
In 2000 I replaced the broken headstone and the missing stone of his son Thomas Bushrod Graves.
Old probate records show the cost of his casket, a pine box, was eighteen dollars the cost of the headstone you see here was twenty five dollars in June of eighteen fifty nine.
 
Thomas Sims Graves
A Soldier in the War of 1812, he built Graves Tavern Stand in 1834 in Lexington Kentucky.
Thomas is buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery near Chaplin KY.
A farmer, a soldier and patriot , a tavern keeper, a good father, devoted husband and a man with a strong faith in God.
May he rest in peace.
Please see his will written Christmas Day December 25, 1858.
Mary Emma Graves
Wife of Thomas S. Graves, buried next to her youngest son Benjamin and daughter in law Elizabeth Newton Graves. Mary is buried in the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery near Buford in Ohio County KY. Mary was the daughter of Benjamin Graves and Sally Cole. Benjamin was the son of Rice Graves. Sally was the daughter of Richard Cole Sr.
 
William Fisher Graves
Son of Thomas S. Graves owned the Graves Tavern Stand, later ran a freight company,stage line (during the Civil War), and carried the mail in Bardstown Kentucky. He was a Provost Marshall and owned a livery stable in Bardstown. William is buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery near Chaplin KY.
Benjamin F. Graves and Elizabeth Newton Graves
Benjamin F. Graves was the natural brother of J. E. Graves, he was a Confederate Soldier like his brother. Benjamin was captured and like many others charged with being a rebel spy. Benjamin and Elizabeth are buried in the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery near Buford in Ohio County Kentucky. His mother Mary Emma Graves is buried next to Benjamin.
Note the Tobacco leaves on his headstone. He was a tobacco farmer.

New headstone of Thomas B. Graves
New headstone of Thomas B. Graves Son Of Thomas S. Graves and Harriett Gist, Thomas is buried next to his father in the Old Methodist Cemetery near Chaplin KY. Upon the death of William Heavenhill he purchased the farm of the namesake of one of Kentucky's most famous Bourbons. Thomas was a tobacco and a hemp farmer and he died suddenly at the young age of 56 years. Please see his obituary on the home page under obituaries. Headstone of Edward Willis Graves
Edward W. Graves and family are buried in Lexington National Cemetery in Lexington Kentucky. Edward was a farmer and a merchant in the late 1800's he owned Graves and Mc Clelland Company a large Hemp Dealer with offices in Lexington Kentucky. He died suddenly at the young age of 55, see his obituary on the home page.

Wife of Edward W. Graves. The family burial plot is in the Lexington Cemetery near the business that Edward Graves once owned.
 
Thomas Smith Graves
Son of Edward Willis Graves, grandson of Thomas Sims Graves. He is named in the will of his grandfather Thomas S. Graves. (See his will in the Wills Section and see his obituary and photo.) Nicknamed Smith Graves, he was born 28 August 1852 in Nelson County Kentucky and died 7 November 1922 in Indianapolis. A graduate of Butler College and a member of The Order Of Masons. He married Miss Emma Grooms born 1864 died 1948. They moved to Indianapolis Indiana where he founded The Graves, Nave Company and was a pioneer in the business as a livestock broker. He and many family members are buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. He is the great grandfather of Michael E. Graves the world renowned architect.

Michael Edward (Max) Graves
Born in Nelson County, KY, Michael E. Graves was a great grandson of Thomas Sims Graves. Like his father he was a livestock broker in Indianapolis, Indiana. His nickname was Max and he went by Max E. Graves. He is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. He is the grandfather of Michael E. Graves the world renowned architect.

Thomas Browning Graves
The son of Michael E. (Max) Graves, father of world famous architect Michael E. Graves, buried with his wife Erma Lowe in Kingston Cemetery, Decatur County, Indiana.

Headstone of James E. Graves
J.E. Graves was a wagonmaster in the Confederate States Army. He is buried in the Old Hickory Grove section of the Laurel Mississippi Cemetery. Son of Thomas S. Graves, the only son to leave KY. He settled in Mississippi at the end of the Civil War. He was released from Confederate duty in Meridian Mississippi and established a farm in Newton County.

Wife of J.E. Graves, Buried in the Weldon Cemetery near Bernice Louisiana. Elizabeth raised fourteen children.

Austin Taylor Graves
Son of William J. Graves, great grandson of Thomas S. Graves, buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville KY. Very successful business man, world traveler, retired president of the Gruen Watch Company.
 
Claude Ervin and Lenora Flurry Graves
Weldon Cemetery, Bernice Louisiana. Son of J.E. Graves grandson of Thomas S. Graves. Claude owned a dry goods store and sold farm implements in Bernice Louisiana. Claude stepped on a rusty nail and died of tetanus in a Rustin, Louisiana hospital.
He was born and died on his birthday August 14th. Claude was 75 years old.
Mark Howard Graves
Great Grandson of Thomas Sims Graves born in Bernice Louisiana in 1805 the only child of Claude Ervin Graves and Nancy Lenora Flurry. He died in Baytown Texas and is buried at Rosewood Cemetery in Humble Texas.

Jesse Woodson James (The Famous Outlaw)
Son of Zerelda Cole and the Reverend Robert Salee James. Photo from the family farm. Jesse's body was exumed and was reburied next to his mother. His mother lived at the Black Horse Tavern and both parents occupied the remains of the Cole Family Farm near Midway KY before going to Missouri.
Alexander Franklin (Frank) James
Alexander Franklin James brother of Jesse James Born in Clay County MO. January 10, 1843,Died February 18, 1915. Frank is buried at the Hill Cemetery, Jackson County Missouri.
 
Susan James Parmer
Susan James Parmer the only sister of Frank and Jesse James married Allen Parmer(a member of Quantrill's Raiders) much to the dismay of her brother Jesse. Susan and Allen moved to Witchita Falls Texas they are both buried at the Riverside Cemetery. If you look closely at her stone you will see the inscription daughter of R (Robert Salee) and Z (Zerelda Cole) James.
Allen Parmer
Allen Parmer was the husband of Susan James, sister of Frank and Jesse James. They were married 24 November 1870. He was born in 6 May 1848, the son of Isaac and Barbara Parmer in Independence Missouri. He died in 27 October 1927, he is buried next to Susan at the Riverside Cemetery in Witchita Falls, Texas. A member of Quantrill's Raiders legend has it at the age of fifteen. He and several others including Frank James and Donnie Pence surrendered to federal troops 26 July 1865. He and Susan lived in St. Louis before moving to Texas in the fall of 1882. Susan died in 1888 after the birth of four children. On 27 December 1892 he married Sarah Ogden. Zerelda Cole Samuel
The natural mother of Frank and Jesse James. She married the Rev. James, Benjamin Simms and finally Dr.Reuben Samuel.
Julia Austin
The headstone of Julia Austin, Consort of James M. Austin, Died July 11, 1835, Age 18 years. This is an old photograph and this headstone no longer exists at least not at the Cole Family Cemetery where it belongs.

Henry James Newton married Mary Cohorn granddaughter of Susan James. He was a photographer who studied under Mathew Brady.

Cole Family Cemetery (1930's Photo)
An old photo of the Cole Family Cemetery in Woodford. The only headstone remaining is Ann Hubbard Cole. It is interesting to note the wooded area, today it has been cleared and all the trees are gone. If you look closely the leaning headstone is likely Ann Coles, just as it is today.
Richard Cole Sr.
Richard Cole Sr. was born 23 April 1729, he died November 21,1814. He is buried next to Ann Hubbard Cole in the Cole Family Cemetery on the hilltop next to where Cole's Bad Inn once stood. Like the old tavern his headstone is no more, this is an old photo.
 
Ann Hubbard Cole
Wife of Richard Cole great grandmother of Frank and Jesse James, buried in the Cole Family Cemetery on the hilltop near the old homeplace. Ann died in 1795, this is the only stone left standing. We have recently replaced the headstone of her husband Richard Cole Sr. who was a Revolutionary Soldier. The Family Plot near the infamous Cole's Bad Inn is at the intersection of KY 421 and Fishers Mill Rd. The Reverend Eli Hobbs
The Reverend Eli Hobbs was granted a license to preach the gospel 20 September 1819. He presided over the Chaplin Methodist Church, the third oldest church in Kentucky. The Reverend Hobbs headstone is the oldest still standing in the Old Methodist Cemetery departing this life in his sixty ninth year in 1830.
